On April 8th, the second-grade students at St. Wenceslaus School took a giant leap into the future as they explored the exciting world of Augmented Reality (AR)!

The day began with students learning the difference between Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). They discovered that VR completely replaces the world around them with a digital one, while AR adds computer-generated images and sounds to the real world—augmenting reality rather than replacing it. They learned that the word augment means “to make something greater by adding to it,” and that’s exactly what they did!

Using special AR tools, the second graders practiced adding lifelike digital images to their environment. From animals and space objects to interactive shapes and characters, the images popped up right in front of their eyes—on desks, in the air, and even floating above their hands. They were able to manipulate the images, rotate them, move them around, and hear realistic sounds that brought each digital object to life.

The students were completely engaged as they explored, experimented, and interacted with the augmented scenes. Whether it was watching a lion roar right next to their pencil case or making a robot dance across their tabletop, each experience sparked curiosity and wonder.
The lesson gave them a hands-on introduction to emerging technology and inspired them to think about how AR can be used in learning, design, medicine, entertainment, and more. Their faces lit up with excitement, and their questions showed just how eager they were to learn more.
It was a day filled with discovery and imagination—and a reminder that learning is even more powerful when we bring it to life!
