Soaring into STEM: 6th Graders Earn Drone Certification and Take Flight!

This past spring, the 6th graders at St. Wenceslaus School took to the skies—well, almost! As part of their STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math) education, students dove into the exciting world of drones and aviation.

The journey began with the Drone Trust Certification, a program that introduces students to drone safety, flight principles, and real-world drone applications. Through engaging lessons and interactive learning, the students built a solid foundation in drone knowledge and responsibility.

Next, they got behind the controls—virtually—with drone flight simulations that helped them master directional controls and flight techniques in a safe, controlled environment. These simulations were an important stepping stone that prepared them for the real thing.

Their journey began with earning their Drone Trust Certification, which introduced them to the rules, safety guidelines, and responsibilities of drone flight. Through this program, students gained a deeper understanding of how drones are used in the real world—from delivery and photography to search-and-rescue missions.

Students then jumped into the pilot’s seat with a drone flight simulator. But this wasn’t just a game—they had to program each takeoff, flight path, and landing to different locations, making this a true test of their planning, logic, and problem-solving skills. These simulations challenged them to think ahead and execute precise movements before ever touching a real drone.

After mastering the simulator, students graduated to real drone piloting using DJI Neo drones in the cafeteria, where they practiced safe takeoffs, controlled hovering, and smooth landings.

The highlight came in the STREAM Lab, where students tackled a full drone flying challenge course. Flying through hoops, navigating obstacle zones, and completing mission-based tasks put all their learning into action.

Through this engaging and high-tech experience, students didn’t just learn how to fly—they learned how to think like engineers, troubleshoot like programmers, and act with responsibility and purpose.

At St. Wenceslaus, we’re proud to help students reach new heights—both in the classroom and in the air!
