Nelson Mandela Elementary School Rolled into Robotics with Sphero RVRs!

Between June 26th and July 12th, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders at Nelson Mandela Elementary School explored the exciting world of robotics with Sphero RVRs! These students didn’t just play with robots—they learned to drive and program them like pros.

We kicked off our robotics adventure with color card challenges. Students practiced carefully driving their RVRs forward, backward, and turning between different colored cards laid out on the floor. It was a fun way to build their confidence and get used to controlling the robots.

Once everyone was comfortable behind the controls, we added a twist—Simon Says with colors! Students had to follow directions like “Simon says drive to red!” or “Simon says turn at blue!” It was a playful way to build listening skills while practicing precise movements.

The following week, our young engineers took things to the next level. Using block-based coding, they programmed their RVRs to move from a starting spot, around a cone, and back again. They had to plan their path, adjust their code, and think like real programmers to get their robot to follow the route successfully.

Throughout the experience, students practiced problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking. Watching their RVRs zoom through the course—because of their own code—was a proud moment for everyone. We can’t wait to see where their robotics journey takes them next!
