Blasting Off to the Moon with VR!

In June, at Nelson Mandela Elementary School, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders went on an out-of-this-world adventure! Using Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, students experienced the historic Apollo 11 moon landing as if they were right there with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

The journey began with the powerful blast-off of the Saturn V rocket, just like it happened in 1969. Students looked around and saw the rocket’s interior, felt the rumble of takeoff, and soared into space. As they explored in VR, computer-generated scenes surrounded them, making it feel real and exciting!

The 3rd graders, who had recently studied the Apollo 11 mission in class, were especially amazed. “I felt like I was really on the moon!” one student shared. They watched as the lunar module landed on the moon’s surface and even saw what it looked like to step out onto the dusty lunar ground. It was like walking in the astronauts’ boots!

Using VR technology brought history to life for these young learners. Instead of just reading about the moon landing, they lived it—learning through sights, sounds, and movement. It was a day filled with wonder, curiosity, and imagination as students reached for the stars and landed on the moon.
