Prairie STEM recently had the pleasure of working with Kindergarten through 2nd-grade students at Fremont Bergan Elementary School for a fun and creative digital storytelling lesson. Using the augmented reality storytelling app ChatterPix Kids, students discovered how technology can help bring their ideas—and their pictures—to life.

During the lesson, students learned how to take or import photos and transform them into talking characters. After choosing their pictures, they used the app’s drawing tools to add mouths, decorations, and other creative graphics. Then came the most exciting part: recording their own voices so their characters could “talk.” With just a swipe to create a mouth and a tap to record, students watched their images come alive as they told short stories, jokes, or messages.

This activity gave students an engaging introduction to several important skills. They practiced creative storytelling, thinking about what their characters might say and how to express ideas clearly. They also explored digital creativity, learning how images, drawings, and audio can work together to create a multimedia story. For many students, it was also an early experience with digital communication, using technology as a tool to share ideas with others.

The excitement in the classroom was contagious. Students eagerly experimented with different photos—some using pictures of animals, objects, or drawings—and couldn’t wait to hear their creations speak. Laughter filled the room as characters delivered silly jokes, friendly greetings, and imaginative mini-stories. Just as importantly, students were learning how technology can be used not just for entertainment, but as a tool for creativity and expression.

Prairie STEM loves bringing hands-on technology experiences like this to young learners. Activities like the ChatterPix storytelling lesson help students build confidence with digital tools while strengthening creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills. Most of all, they show students that learning with technology can be both meaningful and a lot of fun.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the teachers and staff at Fremont Bergan Elementary School for welcoming Prairie STEM into their classrooms and supporting opportunities that spark curiosity and creativity in young learners.
