Second-grade students at Howard Kennedy had fun in hands-on lessons on pollination and seed dispersal in August and September.

The second graders created their own bees for the pollination lesson and observed how the body and legs of the bee are specially made to attract pollen. They flew their bees from a pollinated flower to another flower. We looked at some real pollen in the digital microscope.

In the seed dispersal lesson, the students looked at different types of seeds still on the plants and checked out their size, shape, and texture. Some were light and airy, some were heavier, and some were prickly. The second graders learned how seeds are dispersed in many different ways, because of their weight, shape, texture, and size. They participated in a hands-on activity by making an animal dispersing seeds.
