Exploring Sustainability: The Nebraska Robotics Expo’s Sustainability STEM Kits

In a world where sustainability is increasingly becoming a priority, engaging young minds in understanding and embracing sustainable practices is paramount. In the heart of Nebraska, the 2022 Nebraska Robotics Expo took on the challenge with gusto, marking its 13th year with a theme that resonated deeply with the state’s ethos: Sustainable Nebraska. And at the forefront of this educational endeavor were the Sustainable Nebraska STEM Kits created by Prairie STEM, generously sponsored by the NASA Nebraska Space Grant and Meta.

Embracing the virtual platform for the second consecutive year, the Expo aimed to reach every corner of Nebraska, inviting schools statewide to participate. What ensued was a remarkable response, with teachers from diverse districts ordering a staggering 1000 Sustainable Nebraska STEM Kits for their students. From Omaha Public Schools to Scotts Bluff Public Schools, from Grand Island to Nebraska City, the enthusiasm was palpable as educators eagerly prepared to introduce their students to the principles of sustainability through engaging hands-on activities.

The Sustainable Nebraska STEM Kits were meticulously curated to cater to different grade levels, ensuring that every student, regardless of their age, could delve into the world of sustainability with relevant and age-appropriate lessons. Divided into four grade bands – Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, 6th to 8th grade, and 9th to 12th grade – each kit contained three distinct lessons aligned with grade-level standards.

For the youngest learners, the K-2nd grade kit offered immersive experiences such as the Seeds to Plan Challenge, where students explored the impact of sunlight on plant growth, and the UV Sunglasses Challenge, which introduced them to the concept of UV protection through fun experimentation. Meanwhile, older students dived into more complex topics like Climate Change and Wind Turbine construction, developing a deeper understanding of environmental issues and renewable energy sources.

One of the standout features of the Sustainable Nebraska STEM Kits was their explicit ties to the local landscape. Each lesson was thoughtfully crafted to resonate with Nebraska’s unique environment, fostering a sense of connection and stewardship among students. For instance, the Ground Water Wells lesson not only taught students about water purification but also referenced the Ogallala Aquifer, a vital resource for the region.

As students across Nebraska delved into these hands-on activities, they not only gained invaluable STEM skills but also imbibed the spirit of sustainability. Whether designing thermal insulators or purifying contaminated water, they were not merely completing tasks but becoming active participants in building a more sustainable future for their communities and beyond.

The impact of the Sustainable Nebraska STEM Kits extended far beyond the confines of the classroom, reaching families and communities as students shared their newfound knowledge and enthusiasm for sustainability. By empowering the next generation with the tools and understanding to tackle pressing environmental challenges, the Nebraska Robotics Expo and Prairie STEM have set the stage for a brighter, more sustainable future for Nebraska and beyond.

In collaboration with visionary sponsors like the NASA Nebraska Space Grant and Meta, the Expo has demonstrated the power of partnerships in driving meaningful educational initiatives. As we reflect on the success of the 2022 Nebraska Robotics Expo and the impact of the Sustainable Nebraska STEM Kits, one thing becomes abundantly clear – when we invest in empowering our youth with the knowledge and skills to shape a sustainable future, the possibilities are limitless.
